CitriSurf®

Passivating stainless steel with citric acid

CitriSurf® is a citric-acid-based cleaning and passivating solution for industrial applications. It safely and environmentally responsibly removes free iron from the surface of stainless steels and creates important conditions for corrosion-resistant, reproducible stainless steel surfaces.

CitriSurf®8050 is a phosphoric-acid- and citric-acid-based material and may therefore cause irritation on unprotected body surfaces. Read the safety data sheet before using this material.

Disposal must be carried out in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.

CitriSurf®8050 should be stored at temperatures between approximately 10° C and 49° C in 316 stainless-steel or approved plastic containers (polyethylene or polypropylene). If the product is accidentally frozen, it returns to its normal state after thawing.

During normal use, the pH value should be between 0.8 and 1.2.

CitriSurf®8050 meets all requirements of ASTM A-967 and AMS 2700.

CitriSurf®8050

CitriSurf®8050 is a high-quality combination of chemicals for derouging, descaling and passivating stainless-steel products. CitriSurf®8050 was specially developed to cost-effectively and efficiently remove all iron oxides and free iron from stainless-steel surfaces and thereby achieve the highest possible chromium oxide values.

APPLICATION

  1. To achieve the best results, the parts to be passivated must be thoroughly cleaned with a suitable cleaning solution before treatment with the CitriSurf® solution.
  2. All equipment, mixers, tanks and pumps must be clean and dry before mixing the CitriSurf® solution. CitriSurf®8050 should be mixed with clean water (deionized or distilled water if desired) at a ratio of 1 part CitriSurf®8050 to 3 parts water by volume in order to fill the tank or piping system used so that all parts and surfaces to be treated are sufficiently covered. Polypropylene, stainless steel or similar materials should be used for the construction of all tanks and equipment used in the CitriSurf® bath. The solution should be agitated in the tank to achieve optimal results. Ideally, this product should also be used in an ultrasonic tank.
  3. For the solution to deliver optimal performance, it must be heated. Teflon-coated (or similar material), stainless-steel or titanium heaters are recommended. Testing should determine the best bath working temperature for the products being manufactured. Typically, this temperature is between 49 °C and 71 °C. Depending on final use, room temperature may also be sufficient.
  4. Immerse the parts to be passivated completely and for a sufficient length of time in the solution to remove all rouging, iron oxide and free iron from the surface. Depending on temperature, stainless-steel grade, hardness, use of ultrasonic technology and surface condition of the parts, 20 to 30 minutes are normally required. In cases of very heavy rouging, an application time of 2 hours or more may be necessary. This value should be determined by testing your product. For piping systems, the CitriSurf® solution should, where possible, circulate through the pipes for the entire passivation time.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and immediately dry completely in air. Drying can be accelerated with a hot-air oven or another drying device in order to obtain an extremely passive surface.
