"CitriSurf® is a perfect and environmentally friendly alternative to passivating with nitric acid!"

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma GmbH & Co. KG

CitriSurf®: efficient and safe

The CitriSurf® method can often be integrated into existing production processes. As all chemicals used are safe and environmentally friendly, this process can be integrated into any operation just like an additional cleaning stage. We will be pleased to assist you with the planning of processes and the validation of systems.

  • Optimum and rapid removal of free iron from the surface
  • Environmentally friendly, safe chemicals
  • Simple and safe application
  • Long service life of the solution
  • Cost reductions, particularly for the disposal

Many firms still work with mineral acids, such as nitric acid, for cleaning and passivation. This passivation method chemically attacks all the components in the surface, not just the surface iron. In some cases, however, iron can be returned to the surface. Nitric acid is known to increase the risk of pitting corrosion. The CitriSurf® method can completely replace the use of nitric acid.

The pharmaceutical industry and the food-processing industry have been appreciating the excellent cleaning effect of citric acid for many years. There have been several long-term studies investigating the technical and chemical properties.

Over the last few years, several projects from a wide range of industries have been published indicating the superiority of CitriSurf® compared to nitric acid. It can now be said that the use of CitriSurf® obtains better results at lower cost using a safe and environmentally friendly method. The reason for the continuing popularity of the application of mineral acids is because the US standards were only updated a few years ago. The QQ-P-35C standard was scrapped to be replaced by the ASTM A-967 standard. In the ASTM A-967 standard, passivation with citric acid is regarded as equivalent to the method using mineral acids. The aviation industry also modified its AMS 2700 standard accordingly.
